In a pivotal development, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon has issued a temporary injunction halting the release of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s report on his investigation into former President Donald Trump. The decision introduces yet another layer of complexity to an already contentious legal battle.
Judge Cannon’s injunction prevents U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland from sharing or disseminating Jack Smith’s report. Specifically, the ruling bars the release of “any drafts of such Report outside the Department of Justice” or “otherwise releasing, distributing, conveying, or sharing with anyone outside the Department of Justice any information or conclusions in the Final Report or in drafts thereof.” The injunction will remain in effect until three days after the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals rules on a related pending motion.

The legal wrangling stems from a case involving Trump’s co-defendants, Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira. Lawyers for the two men argue that the special counsel’s appointment was unconstitutional, a claim rooted in Judge Cannon’s previous rulings. In a late-night filing on Monday, Nauta and De Oliveira’s attorneys formally requested the injunction, citing the need to maintain the status quo until the appellate court addresses the matter.
