The City of Minneapolis released a public statement on X warning residents to stay away from the area. The city wrote, “There is an active police situation at Annunciation Church, 509 W. 54th St. There is no active threat to the community at this time. The shooter is contained. Stay away from the area to allow emergency personnel to help victims – W. 54th Street between Lyndale and Nicollet Ave.”
National leaders quickly responded as the tragedy made headlines across the country. President Trump issued a statement expressing sorrow and urging Americans to pray. He said, “I have been fully briefed on the tragic shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The FBI quickly responded and they are on the scene. The White House will continue to monitor this terrible situation. Please join me in praying for everyone involved!”
Minnesota’s Democrat Governor Tim Walz confirmed that he had been briefed and that law enforcement agencies are fully engaged on the ground. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, meanwhile, told reporters he is “monitoring” the developing situation.
Federal law enforcement is heavily involved. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed that federal agents are already en route to the school and promised updates would follow. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) has also been deployed to assist local police.
Annunciation Catholic School, located in south Minneapolis near the intersection of 54th Street and Lyndale Avenue, serves children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The school had only resumed classes for the new academic year earlier this week. Wednesday morning’s Mass, which began at 8:15 a.m., was underway when the shots rang out, sending students and faculty scrambling for safety.
FOX 9 sources have confirmed that the suspect is dead, though authorities have not yet released his identity or a possible motive. What pushed this armed man to enter a school filled with children remains unclear, and investigators are working quickly to determine the details.
Law enforcement officials are preparing to deliver additional updates. A press conference originally scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Eastern was delayed but began shortly before noon. Authorities are expected to address the number of victims and provide clarity on the condition of the children being treated.
