Representative Mike Johnson (R-LA) won the coveted post of House Speaker for the 118th United States Congress after a stressful twenty-two days of competition. The contest for this coveted job enthralled the country with an extraordinary field of fourteen contenders, and it ended with four dramatic floor votes.
Observation! At roll call, 429 members participated, casting crucial votes. Johnson received 220 of the 215 necessary votes, which was more than enough to win the Speaker’s gavel, with 209 Democrats and 220 Republicans present (just one absent).

Just hours before the pivotal vote, Johnson made a strong and patriotic speech on social media site X. putting up the American flag with the classic saying “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
After several rounds of voting, Johnson emerges as the GOP’s final candidate remaining and wins the House speaker ship. Johnson holds a commanding lead throughout the evening, with Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) being his nearest opponent.

“Democracy is messy sometimes, but it is our system. This conference that you see, this House Republican majority, is united,” Rep. Johnson stated on Tuesday evening during a press conference.
“We’re going to serve the people of this country. We’re going to restore their faith in this Congress, this institution of government… We’re going to restore your trust in what we do here. You’re going to see a new form of government and we are going to move this quickly. This group here is ready to govern. We’re going to govern well. We’re going to do what’s right by the people and I believe the people are going to reward that next year. But we have a lot of big priorities ahead of us right now. The world is on fire,” he added.

Johnson’s electoral journey was far from easy. The Republican contest for the speakership was tumultuous, with a number of prominent contenders pulling out.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise withdrew his nomination after he realized he didn’t have enough votes to win the post.
The nomination list for the conference was purged of Representatives Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Tom Emmer (R-MN). Their withdrawal was caused by Emmer’s lack of votes and Jordan’s botched speakership effort.
Following Kevin McCarthy’s dismissal, there was a void in leadership. In the end, this resulted in a difficult and contentious electoral process characterized by internal strife and public scrutiny.
Now, twenty-five Republicans who supported Jim Jordan in the House have switched to backing Johnson.
