The fallout from James Comey’s bizarre Instagram post isn’t dying down—it’s intensifying. The former FBI director is now facing a firestorm from Republican lawmakers who are calling for him to be permanently banned from holding any federal position after a cryptic message that many believe called for violence against President Donald Trump.
Comey sparked outrage when he posted a photo on Instagram showing seashells arranged to read “86 47.” For many, the meaning was obvious: “86” being slang for “eliminate,” and “47” referencing Trump, who would be the 47th president if re-elected. Although Comey attempted to walk back the message, saying it was misunderstood, critics aren’t buying it.
“Cool shell formation on my beach walk,” Comey initially wrote in the now-deleted post. After intense backlash, he tried to cover his tracks: “I posted earlier a picture of some shells I saw today on a beach walk, which I assumed were a political message. I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence. It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.”
