The U.S. Secret Service shot an armed man near the White House early Sunday morning after a confrontation just past midnight, according to a statement from the agency.
Officers encountered the suspect a block away from the White House, near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, as first reported by Fox News. The confrontation escalated when the man brandished a firearm, prompting agents to open fire.
Authorities had already been alerted about a potentially suicidal individual traveling from Indiana to Washington, D.C. On Saturday, law enforcement issued a warning about the man, who was believed to be in distress and possibly dangerous.

Around midnight, Secret Service officers located a vehicle matching the suspect’s description near 17th and F Streets, NW. They also spotted a man nearby who fit the description.
