Washington, D.C. is about to see the biggest shake-up in the federal workforce in modern history. More than 100,000 federal employees are preparing to walk away in a single day under President Trump’s unprecedented “deferred resignation” initiative. Supporters say it’s the most dramatic step yet toward finally draining the swamp and restoring accountability to government.

The message was clear: be ready for waves of resignations and possible reductions in force if Congress doesn’t deliver full funding. According to the New York Post, agencies have already begun drafting plans to cut “nonessential” positions and reorganize bloated departments.
This all stems from a January 28, 2025 memo circulated by OPM, bluntly titled “Fork in the Road.” In it, the Trump administration laid out the deferred resignation option. Federal workers were offered continued pay and benefits through September 30—but only if they signed the agreement, waived certain legal rights, and committed to leaving government service by a strict deadline.
