Bodycam Catches Sunny Hostin Pulling Rank on Cops

As officers questioned Gabriel, Sunny Hostin arrived and quickly made her identity known.

“My name is Sunny Hostin and I’m one of the co-hosts of ‘The View’ and I’m a former federal prosecutor,” she said.

Hostin then urged officers to consider her son’s background rather than pursue more serious action.

“That’s my son. He’s a Harvard graduate, he doesn’t have a criminal record,” she told police.

Authorities indicated that Gabriel claimed he had been out running when he noticed an open gate near the tracks and entered the restricted area. While he maintained the situation was a mistake, officers explained that entering railroad property is treated seriously because of the significant safety risks associated with active train lines.

Bodycam footage shows Hostin continuing to advocate on behalf of her son, again emphasizing his credentials and character.

“I’m a former federal prosecutor. He knows. He’s a Harvard grad who teaches 4th grade geometry to South Bronx kids,” Sunny Hostin said.

“He’s not a kid who’s ever in trouble. It’s an innocent mistake,” she said.

Police acknowledged Gabriel’s cooperation throughout the encounter. However, officers also made clear that the situation involved conduct that could have resulted in a more severe response.

One MTA officer stated directly that trespassing on active railroad property carries serious consequences.

“I want to make that clear, okay? Where you were on the tracks is an arrestable offense.”

The officer later explained why authorities were handling the matter as a violation rather than pursuing a more significant charge.

“We’re dimming it down to a trespass violation because you were in the right-of-way, you weren’t in the gauge or anything, which is the middle area where the tracks were on,” one officer said.

The officer also noted that Gabriel’s behavior during the interaction and his lack of prior issues were factors taken into consideration.

“And you’ve been very cooperative with us and you have a good background, everything like that. We know you’re not a criminal or anything like that but our hands are tied with cameras everywhere,” an officer added.

Despite the relatively limited charge, the release of the footage ignited a firestorm on social media. Many users questioned why Hostin repeatedly referenced her son’s education, career, and personal achievements during an encounter involving a potential violation of the law.

Others argued that the footage raises broader questions about whether well-connected individuals receive different treatment than ordinary Americans. The legal matter remains unresolved. Gabriel Hostin is scheduled to appear in court in New Rochelle on July 31.

Meanwhile, Sunny Hostin has reportedly been working behind the scenes to persuade prosecutors to dismiss the case entirely.

According to a letter obtained by TMZ and sent to Assistant Westchester County District Attorney Amanda Greene, Hostin argued that her son should not face lasting consequences from the incident.

In the letter, she described Gabriel as “an avid runner and former Junior Olympian track athlete who was in the area training.”

Hostin further urged prosecutors to drop the matter, emphasizing what she described as his exemplary background and future potential.

“Dismissal would avoid imposing unnecessary consequences on a young man who has demonstrated exceptional character and achievement and who poses no risk to the community,” she wrote.
