Video from the lengthy deposition showed Clinton reaching for water with visible shaking in his hands, fueling another round of questions about the health of the 42nd president.
There has been no public confirmation that Clinton has been diagnosed with a neurological disorder, and his representatives have previously characterized his tremors as age-related.
Still, the moment arrived against the backdrop of Clinton’s long and well-documented history of serious medical problems.
Clinton Finally Faces Congressional Questioning
The deposition represented the culmination of a prolonged battle between Clinton’s attorneys and the House Oversight Committee.
Clinton had resisted the committee’s subpoena, with his legal team challenging its enforceability. After missed appearances and the prospect of contempt proceedings, the former president ultimately sat for questioning in Chappaqua, New York.
Rep. Nancy Mace later said Clinton continued responding “even when his attorneys told him to shut up.”
Investigators questioned Clinton for hours about his association with Epstein and confronted him with photographs connected to the disgraced financier’s social circle.
Clinton maintained that he had never participated in Epstein’s criminal conduct.
“I saw nothing, and I did nothing wrong,” he said in his opening statement.
Clinton also warned lawmakers that more than two decades had passed since many of the events under discussion and that he would not necessarily remember every encounter.
At one point, a Republican lawmaker floated the theory that Epstein might have been involved in an intelligence-linked “honey pot” operation targeting prominent figures.
Clinton laughed.
But it was not the laugh that ultimately generated some of the most intense online discussion.
It was the trembling.
A Glass of Water Becomes a Viral Moment
During questioning from Mace, cameras captured Clinton lifting a glass of water while his hands visibly shook.
The clip circulated rapidly after footage of the deposition became public.
A tremor by itself proves very little. Clinton is 80 years old, and neither the video nor outside commentary can establish its cause.
Yet concern surrounding Clinton’s condition has been magnified by another unusual episode involving the former president.
Months before his congressional appearance, Clinton was photographed at an airport in the Hamptons alongside what appeared to be a portable medical device associated with cardiac monitoring and emergency defibrillation.
Clinton has not publicly said that he personally requires such equipment.
Dr. Stuart Fischer, an internal medicine physician who has not treated the former president, nevertheless offered a concerning interpretation of the photograph.
“He appears to be at risk for a cardiac rhythm disturbance by virtue of carrying this equipment around,” Fischer said. “This is very serious because the arrhythmia can come out of nowhere.”
Fischer also emphasized the possible relationship between intense stress and cardiac problems.
“Psychological stress has a very direct effect on the human heart. If you miss ventricular fibrillation, the window of opportunity where you must hopefully treat it is very small – and the person can die immediately. It can happen at any second.”
Those comments are an outside physician’s assessment, not a diagnosis of Clinton.
But Clinton’s medical history gives the concerns additional context.
Clinton’s Heart Problems Go Back Decades
Clinton’s cardiovascular troubles are hardly a secret.
In 2004, only three years after leaving the White House, he underwent quadruple coronary bypass surgery after doctors discovered severe arterial blockages.
The following year brought another operation after complications involving scar tissue and his lung.
Then came another major cardiac scare in 2010. After experiencing chest discomfort, Clinton underwent a procedure in which doctors inserted two coronary stents.
His health problems have not been limited to his heart.
In 2021, Clinton spent several days hospitalized after an infection spread into his bloodstream. He returned to the hospital in December 2024 after developing a fever.
Then, in 2025, video showed the aging former president appearing to lose his footing on a New York sidewalk and grabbing a pole for support.
None of those incidents establishes what caused the trembling seen during his congressional testimony.
They do, however, illustrate why footage of an 80-year-old former president enduring hours of high-stakes questioning immediately attracted attention.
Comer Says Clinton Cooperated — But Investigators Wanted More
House Oversight Chairman James Comer offered a surprisingly cordial assessment following Clinton’s appearance.
He said the former president answered the committee’s questions and even credited Clinton with having “Southern people skills.”
But Comer made clear that investigators did not walk away completely satisfied.
“We were hoping to get more,” he said.
That may prove to be the most consequential part of the story.
Congressional scrutiny surrounding Epstein is not ending with Clinton’s deposition. Investigators have also sought testimony from people with financial and personal connections to Epstein, including Les Wexner, Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn.
That means additional testimony could provide lawmakers with new information to compare against Clinton’s answers.
For Clinton, the political problem is straightforward: Epstein remains one of the most radioactive names in American public life, and every newly released photograph, document or piece of testimony involving powerful people inevitably produces another round of questions.
Clinton has consistently denied wrongdoing related to Epstein.
Those denials deserve to be reported alongside the evidence.
But Republicans are equally unlikely to accept the argument that questioning a former president should stop merely because the events occurred decades ago.
An Extraordinary Scene for a Former President
The broader significance of Clinton’s testimony extends beyond one viral clip.
A man who once occupied the most powerful office in the world was forced to sit before congressional investigators and answer questions under oath about one of the darkest scandals involving America’s political and financial elite.
Clinton’s age and medical history made the spectacle even more striking.
The former president entered the deposition after years of bypass surgery, stents, hospitalizations and other health scares. He emerged after hours of questioning insisting that he neither witnessed nor participated in Epstein’s crimes.
“I saw nothing, and I did nothing wrong,” Clinton said.
Congress now has his testimony.
Investigators have the photographs.
And more witnesses could still be coming.
Clinton may have completed his deposition, but for Republicans investigating Epstein’s network, the former president’s testimony appears to be another chapter — not the end of the story.
