Biden’s Venezuela Move: Desperation or Strategy?

Deportations to Venezuela will resume just hours after the Biden Administration emphasized the necessity for construction of a border wall after years of deriding the project as a “waste of money.” Former President Trump’s border policies were described as harsh and wasteful by President Biden and his Democratic supporters.

A change in policy is necessary because record numbers of Central American migrants are crossing the southern border. Red states are transferring recently arrived illegal immigrants to Democrat-run “sanctuary cities” as a solution to the problem. Several friends, including New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams, are pressuring the government to act as a result of this decision.

Wonderful news! The Venezuelan government has agreed to allow the return of its people, the Department of Homeland Security reported on Thursday. Keep checking back for further details on the start time and frequency of the flights. After years of tense diplomatic relations between the two nations, this is a significant step forward.

Several Venezuelan migrants held in federal custody will be deported in the coming days, a senior DHS official told reporters. “Today’s announcement makes clear that we are committed to strictly enforcing immigration laws and quickly removing individuals who do not avail themselves of these orderly processes and choose to cross our border unlawfully,” a DHS spokesman said.

A startling 50,000 Venezuelan migrants crossed the southern border into the United States in September alone.

In a brave step, President Biden ordered his interim DHS secretary to put a 100-day freeze on deportations as soon as he took office. Additionally, he reversed a contentious Trump administration policy that gave priority to deporting and arresting illegal immigrants. Keep checking back for more information as this story develops.

The resumption occurs one day after the Biden Administration changed its steadfast position on building a border wall. The administration has made a complete about-face and acknowledged that there is a “urgent and pressing need” to build a border wall in southern Texas after halting construction of Trump’s wall, suing border states for erecting their own barriers, and calling the project a “waste of money.”

“There is presently an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States in order to prevent unlawful entries into the United States in the project areas,” DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas made the statement in a formal Federal Register filing. “In order to ensure the expeditious construction of the barriers and roads in the project areas, I have determined that it is necessary that I exercise the authority that is vested in me by section 102(c) of IIRIRA.”

In spite of Border Patrol agents indicating a spike in unlawful incursions, Mayorkas proclaimed the southern border “secure” during an Aspen Security Forum in July 2022.
