Ahead of the 2024 election, the Biden administration has rolled out billions in payments to insurance companies in what some critics see as a politically motivated move. According to Politico, these payments include a $15-per-member monthly boost to insurers under new changes. While Democrats argue this helps ease rising costs, Republicans have labeled it a cynical ploy to avoid voter backlash before the November election.
Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), a physician, called out the administration for what he described as blatant misuse of taxpayer funds.
“It’s using the federal treasury for political advantage,” Cassidy said. “The Treasury is going to borrow more money to do this… I don’t think it matters to them, but it should matter to us as taxpayers.”
The IRA has also dramatically changed the landscape for pharmaceutical companies, leading to further consequences for Medicare beneficiaries. Provisions in the law force drug manufacturers into so-called “negotiations” with Medicare, which a Wall Street Journal editorial described as “extortion.”
“Drug makers that don’t participate or reject the government’s price face a daily excise tax that starts at 186% and climbs to 1,900% of a drug’s daily revenue,” the editorial stated.
Additionally, manufacturers are now required to pay rebates to the government if they increase prices faster than inflation, a policy that critics argue disincentivizes innovation. The WSJ editorial concluded that these measures could ultimately result in fewer new medicines, leaving patients with limited options.
