The 43-year-old Smirnov was accused of fabricating a record and making a false statement. Soon after returning from a trip abroad, he was taken into custody in Las Vegas on Wednesday. This week, he is scheduled to appear in court for the first time.
Prosecution asserts that Smirnov spoke with Burisma executives in 2017, following Joe Biden’s resignation as vice president, underscoring Biden’s lack of involvement in US policy at the time.
Prosecutors assert that in 2017, Smirnov converted his ordinary business transactions with Burisma into allegations of bribery against Joe Biden. He had previously expressed his disapproval of Biden’s candidacy before making this change.
Investigators have claimed that Smirnov altered some of his story when he was questioned by FBI agents in 2023.
