Hollywood’s queen of liberal outrage, Barbra Streisand, is once again using her platform to take shots at President Donald Trump—this time through her music. In her latest album, The Secret of Life: Partners, Volume 2, Streisand admits her disdain for Trump and her anxiety about the world under his potential second term influenced her choice of songs. The album, a collection of duets with legendary artists like Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan, appears to double as a political statement wrapped in melody.
In an interview with the Associated Press to promote her new release, Streisand admitted, “I’d like to be happier. But every time I turn on the television — and I’m a glutton for punishment, obviously — I’m fascinated and horrified at the same time, you know?”
She confessed that her mood, weighed down by her perception of world events and Trump’s political comeback, crept into the emotional tone of the album. Songs like Sting’s “Fragile” and her reimagined version of “Love Will Survive” with Seal were chosen with what she says were subconscious motivations tied to Trump’s reemergence on the political stage.
