A vacation in one of Europe’s most celebrated historic cities ended in tragedy after a powerful explosion ripped through a residential building in the heart of Athens, killing six people — including four American tourists.
The blast struck shortly after 7:30 a.m. Friday on Lysikratous Street in Athens’ Plaka neighborhood, a heavily visited district sitting beneath the Acropolis. The force of the explosion devastated the building and sent debris crashing into surrounding streets.
Greek emergency crews spent more than 24 hours digging through the wreckage before authorities confirmed Saturday that six bodies had been recovered.
