In 2022, Ocasio-Cortez brought him onto her reelection campaign as deputy communications director. His LinkedIn profile confirms his role lasted until late 2023. However, as Fox News pointed out, federal law prohibits DACA recipients from holding paid positions in congressional offices. So, while he may not have been collecting a government paycheck, AOC ensured he remained deeply involved in her political operation.
“Alexandria comes from an organizing background herself, so she likes to hire people who share that experience,” de la Vega said. “She’s an excellent communicator, and the team she built is top-notch.”
But the bigger question remains: How was an illegal immigrant—who had openly advocated for policies benefiting other illegal immigrants—allowed to wield influence at such a high level? And why was a sitting member of Congress willing to bend the rules to keep him in her inner circle?
Despite his high-profile role, de la Vega ultimately chose to leave the United States.
“In my late 20s, I began to seriously consider how precarious my future in the U.S. was,” he admitted. “I thought about what would happen if I just left, if I went to Latin America, if I embraced my identity as a Latino instead of trying to fit the image of a picture-perfect immigrant.”
His wife, also an illegal immigrant without DACA protection, faced even greater risks. Disillusioned by the Democratic Party’s repeated failures to pass meaningful immigration reform, de la Vega lost faith in the movement.
“I became frustrated with how the immigration movement was operating. The messaging, the policy proposals—there was a massive amount of money behind them, yet they all failed,” he said. “The movement has become calcified. It’s run by executives with foundation ties who are disconnected from field workers and grassroots leadership.”
This admission raises serious concerns about the level of influence illegal immigrants have on American policies. A foreign national, who should not have even been in the country, played a major role in shaping the Democratic Party’s immigration agenda and lobbying for taxpayer-funded payouts to illegal aliens.
It’s nothing short of a betrayal of the American people.
Even more alarming is the fact that AOC knowingly exploited a legal loophole to keep de la Vega in a position of power. Rather than serving the citizens of New York, she prioritized an illegal immigrant’s role in her campaign.

Ocasio-Cortez’s decision reflects a troubling pattern among Democrats—placing illegal immigrants first while leaving American workers behind. New Yorkers elected her to represent them, not to champion foreign nationals who defy the country’s laws.
Her actions prove once again that for the radical left, the needs of American citizens come second to their open-border agenda. And they’ll bend the law as far as it takes to keep it that way.
