Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is facing growing backlash from constituents in her own backyard, as fed-up voters say she’s ditched the people who sent her to Congress in favor of chasing the national limelight. From jet-setting with Bernie Sanders to brushing off community concerns, it’s becoming increasingly clear that AOC has her sights set far beyond the Bronx and Queens.
Once hailed as a grassroots star, Ocasio-Cortez has traded in town halls and neighborhood advocacy for national tours and potential 2028 ambitions. Her recent appearance alongside self-proclaimed socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) during their “Fighting Oligarchy” tour drew headlines—but not for the reasons her district hoped.
While thousands of progressives cheered her across the country, back home in New York, residents were left wondering why their Congresswoman was more interested in playing celebrity than solving real problems.
“She used to hold monthly town halls,” said one local resident, “but now, if you want to talk to her, good luck.” Those town halls have all but vanished from her schedule, replaced by interviews, rallies, and speculative talk of a future White House run—or even a primary challenge against Senator Chuck Schumer.
