In a move that’s rattling Washington, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Republicans in demanding a full ban on lawmakers trading individual stocks. The self-described democratic socialist from New York has thrown her weight behind legislation targeting one of the Capitol’s most glaring conflicts of interest.
On Wednesday, AOC appeared at a press event hosted by Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), who welcomed her to the podium with a friendly fist bump. The unlikely alliance underscored just how widespread public anger has become over members of Congress enriching themselves while shaping policy.
“That’s good. Thank you, thank you, Tim. Good afternoon, everyone. Hope everyone’s doing well. I got to say, I know it was — man, what was it, like six or seven years ago now, Chip — that you and I were elected here. And one of the first conversations that Representative Chip Roy [Texas] and I had, had to do with money in politics, I remember, and just in general,” AOC began.
