Another House Race Just Shattered Expectations!

In a dramatic and closely-watched race, Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur has won re-election to a 22nd term in the U.S. House of Representatives, holding onto her seat in Ohio’s 9th Congressional District. The Associated Press called the race for Kaptur at 1:02 p.m. EST on Wednesday, confirming her victory over Republican state Rep. Derek Merrin.

With almost all precincts reporting, Kaptur narrowly defeated Merrin, securing 48.27% of the vote, compared to Merrin’s 47.63%. The margin was razor-thin, with Kaptur edging out Merrin by just 2,382 votes. A Libertarian candidate, Tom Pruss, received around 4% of the vote, which likely siphoned off votes that could have otherwise gone to Merrin.

This win marks another milestone for Kaptur, who remains the longest-serving woman in the history of the U.S. House. Her victory is especially significant as Ohio’s 9th District was dramatically reshaped by recent redistricting, making the seat one of the most competitive in the country. Despite the reshaped district, Kaptur’s victory solidifies the Democratic hold on the seat, even as Republicans continue to strengthen their majority in the House.
