The lease was already set to expire this year, with plans to relocate, as reported by the Chicago Tribune. But DOGE’s decision to shut it down early drew attention, not only for the money saved but also for what some claim is an underlying jab at Obama.
Not surprisingly, some on the left are questioning the motives behind the move. Retired University of Baltimore law professor Charles Tiefer speculated that the decision may be politically driven, stating: “It’s possible (DOGE) has some particular malice toward the real estate holding the archives for the last really popular two-term president.” However, he also admitted that the move could be “fakery about unrealized savings, the same as in hundreds of other contracts.”
Despite the criticisms, the financial impact is undeniable—U.S. taxpayers will no longer foot the bill for the costly lease at the Hoffman Estates site.
The Hoffman Estates building houses an extensive collection of historical documents and artifacts tied to Obama’s presidency. According to NARA estimates, there are approximately 25 million unclassified paper documents stored at the site, all of which are being digitized for future access at the Obama Presidential Center once it opens.
In addition to the documents, the site contains 35,000 physical artifacts, many of which will be transferred to NARA storage facilities in Maryland and occasionally loaned to the Obama Presidential Center. Among the items in the collection: a silver BlackBerry once used by Obama, a draft of his first inaugural speech written on a paper pad, a signed Pittsburgh Steelers football, and a jeweled sword from Saudi Arabia. The collection also includes dresses worn by former First Lady Michelle Obama and various gifts given to the Obama family during their White House years.
With the closure of the Hoffman Estates site, all documents and artifacts will be relocated. The digitized records will be housed within the Obama Presidential Center, ensuring public access to the historical archives. Meanwhile, the physical artifacts will be stored at a secure NARA facility in Maryland, with some items periodically put on display at the future Obama Center.
Just Released: Trump White House Collector’s Bobblehead!
DOGE’s latest move is one of many aimed at eliminating wasteful government spending. Under Musk’s leadership, the agency has aggressively reviewed and canceled costly federal contracts and leases deemed unnecessary. While some critics claim these cuts are politically motivated, supporters argue that they are long overdue, especially in an era of skyrocketing federal debt.
Whether intentional or not, the closure of Obama’s library site is more than just a budgetary decision—it’s a symbolic moment in the ongoing battle over government spending and legacy-building in Washington. For now, taxpayers can count this as a rare victory in the fight against bureaucratic waste.

So wr taxpayers have been paying for a lease near Chicago, even though Obama is planning to mot keep that site and to move to a third one. So basically three ongoing sites for Obama storage and Presidential sites, unless Musk can get the one terminated, then it’s down to two leases, one his Library is being built on, and a second one for storage for the Library and alone Of the storage ones is costing us $1.5 .MILLION/ YR, EVERY YR, JUST FOR STORAGE? Yes, MUSK, please do cancel that lease. And why isn’t storage being taken care of at the Library build site, not one site for the Obama Presidential Library and one for “the Obama Presidential CENTER!”. SO Obama gets TWO PAID FOR, BUILT, MANTAINED? WOW.
