In a post on Truth Social, Trump made it clear that these measures were taken to protect American citizens from the surge of illegal immigration and deadly drugs, including fentanyl, pouring across the border.
“Today, I have implemented a 25% Tariff on Imports from Mexico and Canada (10% on Canadian Energy), and a 10% additional Tariff on China. This was done through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) because of the major threat of illegal aliens and deadly drugs killing our Citizens, including fentanyl. We need to protect Americans, and it is my duty as President to ensure the safety of all. I made a promise on my Campaign to stop the flood of illegal aliens and drugs from pouring across our Borders, and Americans overwhelmingly voted in favor of it,” Trump stated on Saturday.
And just like that, Mexico responded.
By Monday morning, Trump announced that Mexico had agreed to deploy 10,000 soldiers to its northern border to stem the tide of illegal migration and fentanyl trafficking into the United States.
“I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country. We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico. I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a ‘deal’ between our two Countries,” Trump confirmed.
Mexico’s quick turnaround on the issue underscores the effectiveness of Trump’s strong-arm negotiating tactics. By applying economic pressure, the administration has secured immediate cooperation from a neighboring country that has long been criticized for failing to address the border crisis.

Meanwhile, Canada, which was also hit with tariffs, appears to be digging in its heels. Officials in Ottawa have hinted at potential retaliation in response to Trump’s actions, but the real question remains: how long can Canada hold out before it, too, follows Mexico’s lead?
As history has shown, when Trump plays hardball, results follow. Will Canada be next to bend the knee and strike a deal, or will the country gamble on a losing fight against America’s booming economy?
