“I was just informed that two repatriation flights from the United States, with a large number of Illegal Criminals, were not allowed to land in Colombia. This order was given by Colombia’s Socialist President Gustavo Petro, who is already very unpopular amongst his people. Petro’s denial of these flights has jeopardized the National Security and Public Safety of the United States,” Trump posted.
To send a strong message, Trump immediately imposed a 25% tariff on all Colombian goods imported into the U.S., warning that the tariffs would double to 50% if Colombia refused to comply.
“Emergency 25% tariffs on all goods coming into the United States. In one week, the 25% tariffs will be raised to 50%,” Trump declared, making it clear that America would no longer tolerate weak leadership abroad.
Trump further emphasized that these tariffs were just the beginning and that Colombia would face additional consequences if Petro continued to reject deportation flights.
“These measures are just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the Criminals they forced into the United States!” he continued.
This bold move sent shockwaves through the political landscape, but one person who was especially outraged was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Known for her radical left-wing views and unwavering support for open borders, AOC immediately rushed to Petro’s defense.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Ocasio-Cortez argued that Trump’s tariffs would hurt American consumers, particularly by driving up the cost of coffee and flowers, two of Colombia’s primary exports.
“To punish Colombia, Trump is about to make every American pay even more for coffee. Remember: WE pay the tariffs, not Colombia. Trump is all about making inflation WORSE for working class Americans, not better. He’s lining the pockets of himself and the billionaire class,” she wrote.
However, Ocasio-Cortez’s alarmist rhetoric quickly aged like milk. Within 35 minutes of Trump’s announcement, Petro caved. The Colombian government suddenly reversed course and announced that it would, in fact, accept the deportation flights.
“The Government of Colombia, under the direction of President Gustavo Petro, has arranged the presidential plane to facilitate the dignified return of the compatriots who were going to arrive in the country today in the morning, coming from deportation flights,” Petro’s office stated.

This embarrassing turn of events left Ocasio-Cortez scrambling to justify her position. Her attempt to paint Trump as a villain fell flat as the former president’s strong leadership produced immediate results. In contrast to the Biden administration’s endless failures on immigration, Trump demonstrated what real action looks like.
While Ocasio-Cortez continues to push for open borders and policies that put American security at risk, Trump’s swift action showed that the days of weak leadership are coming to an end. This latest incident is just another example of how the left continues to fail in its fight against Trump, and if this trend continues, Ocasio-Cortez’s 2028 ambitions may be over before they even begin.
