In a decision sparking controversy, Massachusetts’ first openly nonbinary lawmaker, Worcester City Councilor Thu Nguyen, announced a month-long hiatus from public duties, citing the impact of being misgendered by colleagues. Nguyen claimed the incidents have taken a toll on their mental health, prompting a temporary withdrawal from their elected responsibilities.
In a statement released to the public, Nguyen emphasized their broader advocacy for inclusion, saying, “We deserve a government that is welcoming, embraces and takes pride in our LGBTQ+ community. As the first nonbinary elected in Massachusetts, I have always said for me it’s not just about identity politics. Making history as the first is one thing, what you do with it is another.”

Allegations of Transphobia on the Council
Nguyen’s concerns center on alleged transphobia within the Worcester City Council. According to Nguyen, Mayor Joseph Petty and Councilor-at-Large Kathleen Toomey publicly misgendered them on the council floor. Additionally, District 2 Councilor Candy Mero-Carlson has been accused of referring to Nguyen as “it,” a claim Mero-Carlson has denied.
