Gibson was in Austin, Texas, recording a podcast with Joe Rogan when news of the fire broke. He admitted feeling uneasy during the session, knowing the flames were threatening his neighborhood. “I was kind of ill at ease while we were talking because I knew my neighborhood was on fire,” he recalled. Upon returning to Malibu, his worst fears were confirmed. “When I got home, sure enough, it wasn’t there.”
Surveying the aftermath, Gibson and his wife, Rose, documented the destruction, finding an unexpected bright spot in the survival of their backyard chickens. “Rose took some, and I took some. The chickens survived. It was amazing,” he shared. Injecting a bit of humor into the grim situation, he added, “The chickens pooped, and they were fine. So we gave them some grain and some water, and they’re happy and laying eggs and stuff. They weren’t roast chickens.”

The fire’s devastation extended beyond Gibson’s property. His neighborhood, a close-knit community of prominent figures, was also hit hard. “Some of the neighbors really got it,” he said. “Ed Harris, the actor who lived down the street—I think his place is gone. It was kind of random. It wasn’t every place, but it was quite a few. A dozen places were just non-existent. I mean, nothing but a chimney and a few roof tiles.”
Despite the overwhelming loss, Gibson remained grounded, emphasizing that material possessions are replaceable. “I lived there for about 14, 15 years. So it was home to me, and I had a lot of personal things there that I can’t get back,” he admitted. “All kinds of stuff, everything from photographs to files to… just personal things that I had from over the years and clothing, and you know, it’s pretty cool stuff, you know, but, you know, hey, that can all be replaced. These are only things.”

Above all, Gibson expressed gratitude that his loved ones were safe. “The good news is that those in my family, and those I love are all well, we’re all happy and healthy and out of harm’s way. And that’s all I care about, really.”
Firefighters continue to battle the massive blaze, which remains 0% contained as dry, windy conditions persist. Officials are bracing for a challenging week ahead as efforts to control the flames remain daunting.
For Gibson, the road to recovery begins with cherishing the safety of his family and the resilience of his spirit. As the star put it, “We’ll go through the usual motions, I guess. There’s some kind of insurance, maybe. I can’t even tell you anymore.” Even in the face of profound loss, Gibson’s perspective serves as a reminder of the enduring value of life over possessions.
