A California judge has sparked outrage by ordering alleged victims of sexual assault to refer to their accused abuser using female pronouns in court. The controversial ruling pertains to Tremaine Carroll, a 52-year-old inmate housed at Central California Women’s Facility, who identifies as a woman despite his violent criminal history and biological male status.
Carroll, already imprisoned for violent offenses, faces multiple allegations of sexual assault from female inmates. Prosecutors argue the pronoun mandate hinders their ability to convey critical facts clearly to the jury, raising serious concerns about justice for the victims.

Prosecutors say Carroll’s criminal behavior didn’t end when he entered prison. Madera County District Attorney Sally Moreno told reporters, “After his first cellmate became pregnant and was moved to Los Angeles, two other cellmates of his had complained that he had raped them, so we have filed rape charges against this inmate.”
