In a proactive move, Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda revealed this week that Mexico is preparing to establish 25 new shelters to accommodate deported migrants. This development comes as the country braces for potential mass deportations under U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.
Ávila Olmeda addressed the media in Tijuana on Monday, emphasizing the urgency of this initiative. The governor confirmed that six shelters will be constructed in Tijuana and two additional facilities in Mexicali, Baja California’s capital city. The rest will be spread strategically across the region to handle the anticipated influx of deportees.

“This is a strategic plan to accommodate exclusively people who get deported after January 20,” she stated. Ávila Olmeda did not hold back in expressing her concerns about Trump’s impending policies, noting, “Throughout his campaign, he threatened to do this, and since he was already president of the United States, we believe this time he will be stricter and tougher when it comes to deportations.”
