Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has sparked fresh controversy with his recent comments on child sex trafficking across the U.S.-Mexico border. During an appearance on CBS’s Face the Nation, Mayorkas appeared to distance himself and his department from the issue, asserting that the responsibility does not fall under the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) jurisdiction.
The exchange came after Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan pressed Mayorkas about the alarming statistic: 32,000 unaccompanied minors have entered the United States between 2019 and 2023. Reports and criticism from figures like Tom Homan, Donald Trump’s incoming border czar, have painted a grim picture, alleging that many of these children are exploited and trafficked by criminal enterprises.

Mayorkas, however, seemed to deflect.
“Margaret, we certainly have received reports of children being trafficked, even those as to whom we know where they are. That is outside the responsibility of the Department of Homeland Security,” Mayorkas explained. “What we do is we turn children over within 72 hours, as the law requires, to the Department of Health and Human Services, and then HHS places those children.”
