Sheriff Chad Chronister, a figure with a checkered record, has withdrawn his name from consideration to lead the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Chronister, currently the sheriff of Hillsborough County, Florida, was nominated on Saturday, sparking widespread outrage from Trump’s base. Initially appointed by then-Florida Governor Rick Scott, Chronister has spent 32 years with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and has been reelected twice. Among the most contentious points was Chronister’s role in enforcing strict COVID-19 mandates during the pandemic.
