In the piece, Routh discusses plans to recruit former Afghan soldiers who had fled the Taliban to join the Ukrainian war effort. He is quoted saying, “We can probably purchase some passports through Pakistan, since it’s such a corrupt country,” adding that he aimed to move them illegally from Iran and Pakistan into Ukraine. The extent of his success remains unclear.
This connection to Ukraine has raised eyebrows, particularly because Malcolm Nance was also mentioned in the same New York Times article. The piece references Nance’s involvement with the Ukrainian International Legion, a unit formed for foreign fighters aiding in Ukraine’s defense. The editorial describes how Nance, with his intelligence background, tried to bring order to the Legion but eventually got caught up in internal chaos.
The involvement of both Routh and Nance in the same conflict zone has led some to speculate that there may be deeper ties. This theory gained traction after Raheem Kassam, a right-wing commentator, linked the two, saying on X (formerly Twitter), “Birds of a feather.” Jack Posobiec, another conservative commentator, also responded, “An associate of Malcolm Nance tried to kill President Trump.”
These claims have sparked broader conspiracy theories, with some suggesting a possible involvement of the CIA or foreign governments in the assassination attempt. There is no confirmed evidence to support these theories at this time.
Just hours before the attempted assassination, Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social to issue a scathing post about the New York Times, calling it “a true threat to democracy.” The timing of this post, coupled with Routh’s connection to the Times’ article, has led to speculation that the media outlet may have inadvertently provided insight into a man who later attempted to take Trump’s life.
Ryan Routh’s social media presence further complicates the narrative. In a series of tweets on X, Routh bizarrely reached out to multiple celebrities, including Sting, Bruno Mars, and Bono, asking them to help produce a tribute song titled “We Are One” for Ukraine. He wrote, “We desperately need increased support for Ukraine and I am saddened we do not have an English song. I have lyrics for We Are One – and need your help producing it please.” This outreach continued throughout late 2023 and into early 2024, with Routh consistently pushing his desire to create a rallying anthem for the war-torn country.

One particularly strange post was directed at the U.S. Ambassador to Kyiv in December 2023. In it, Routh claimed his partner Volodymyr had stalled progress on the Afghan soldier project and appealed for assistance, saying, “We sent 100 files to GUR and have 1000. Please help me.”
The allegations surrounding Routh’s assassination attempt are deepened by his ties to Ukraine and his bizarre social media activity. The link to Malcolm Nance, though speculative at this point, has added fuel to conspiracy theories on the right. The full extent of Routh’s connections and motivations remains unclear, but his actions and background are being thoroughly investigated.
As this story develops, questions continue to mount. Is this simply the case of a deranged individual with delusions of grandeur, or is there a more sinister plot involving foreign entanglements and political animosities? The coming days may reveal more about the man behind this terrifying attempt on Trump’s life and his broader network of connections.
