This Friday, the House of Representatives passed a significant defense spending bill that included several Republican-backed provisions, despite objections from President Joe Biden and his administration. The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which covers funding for military priorities across the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy, was advanced after a series of votes on more than 300 amendments, reported Fox News.
A critical component of this year’s NDAA, which stirred considerable controversy, was the proposed 19.5 percent pay raise for junior enlisted troops—an increase passed despite direct opposition from the White House. The NDAA typically sees bipartisan support; however, debates over cultural provisions this year led to a partisan split, with Democrats largely opposing the bill due to disagreements over these measures.

Republican lawmakers argue that rolling back diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the military, among other progressive policies, will enhance military readiness and address ongoing recruitment challenges. This week, the House approved three amendments aimed at eliminating DEI roles in the armed forces, including the Chief Diversity Officer position and related personnel, and enforcing a hiring freeze on such positions in the future. Additionally, amendments were passed to prevent the promotion of critical race theory and related ideologies within military training and operations.
Health policies at the Pentagon also faced revisions, with two new measures blocking funding for gender transition surgeries and transgender-related medical care, and another barring the Pentagon from supporting any abortion-related services.
