A Democrat from Atlantic municipal and a former municipal councilor was taken into custody on charges of planning a large-scale misuse of New Jersey’s absentee voting regulations. While advising different politicians, he made use of his reputation for influencing close elections via organizational skill.
Charges of election fraud pertaining to the improper use of absentee ballots led to the arrest of Craig Callaway, 64, last week. He’ll provide an explanation why “one count of depriving, defrauding, and attempting to deprive and defraud the residents of the state of New Jersey of a fair and impartially conducted election process by the fraudulent procurement, casting, and tabulation of ballots,” as stated in a statement from the New Jersey U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“Holding free and fair elections is a bedrock principle of our democracy. As alleged in the complaint, the defendant attempted to deprive New Jersey residents of a fair election by fraudulently procuring and casting ballots. Today’s charges reflect our office’s commitment to hold to account those who try to undermine the electoral process,” Attorney General of the United States Sellinger, Philip R.

“Voter fraud at any level chips away at the faith people have in our system,” James E. Dennehy, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Newark, stated. “We’re unable as American citizens to hold our government accountable if our votes are compromised. The FBI and our law enforcement partners understand the gravity of protecting the process and will bring those criminals who break the law to justice.”
According to the prosecution, Callaway was found to have paid organizers between $30 and $50 to act as go-betweens and help people complete their applications for absentee voting. After that, these organizers would turn in paperwork saying they were authorized to help voters. They allegedly received blank absentee votes from municipal election offices and gave them to Callaway and his allies.
Affected voters told investigators that they never gave Callaway or other parties permission to let them vote, and that they did not cast a ballot in the fraudulently conducted election of 2022. In those elections, however, a large number of their mail-in ballots were tallied.
Callaway may be hit with a $250,000 fine in addition to a maximum of five years in jail. Any court would probably weigh this against him given his previous 40-month sentence for bribery while serving as an Atlantic City councilor. He also reportedly planned a prostitute bribery scam against a fellow municipal councilor while he was in court on similar counts.
Callaway recruited prostitutes in 2006 to entice Councilman Eugene Robinson into a hotel room equipped with concealed cameras. After Callaway threatened to disclose the video, Robinson, a Baptist preacher, reported the incident to the police. Robinson said that the money handed to the women was for drinks and denied any wrongdoing.
Fidelina Santiago, a newly elected Democratic city councilor in Lawrence, Massachusetts, was accused in December of breaking into voter mailboxes in order to locate blank mail-in ballots. The goal of the probe, headed by Democratic Secretary of State William Galvin, was to wrap up prior to her council seat being assigned in January 2024.
