The attack happened inside Qatari territorial waters, raising fresh concerns that the shaky ceasefire between the United States and Iran may be hanging by a thread.
According to officials, the vessel was traveling from Abu Dhabi to Mesaieed Port when it was hit northeast of Doha. The strike reportedly caused a small onboard fire, though crew members managed to extinguish it before the situation spiraled into a larger disaster.
Despite the attack, the ship remained operational and continued toward its destination.
Qatar’s Ministry of Defense confirmed the incident in an official statement.
“A commercial cargo vessel in the country’s territorial waters, northeast of Mesaieed Port, coming from Abu Dhabi, was targeted by a drone this morning. This incident resulted in a limited fire onboard the vessel, with no reported injuries. The vessel continued its journey toward Mesaieed Port after the fire was brought under control,” Qatar’s Ministry of Defense confirmed in a statement. “The necessary measures were taken & coordination was carried out with the relevant authorities.”
Officials did not publicly identify who launched the drone, though the incident immediately fueled suspicions across the Gulf region as multiple countries reported hostile aerial activity within hours of the maritime strike.
