A Georgian lawyer was found guilty of defrauding the federal government of over $7 million in funds intended for the Paycheck Protection Program.

Prosecutors claim that Shelitha Robertson, 62, of Atlanta, Georgia, lied on PPP loan applications about the average monthly payroll and number of employees for each of her four businesses. The purpose of the aid was to keep small businesses afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prosecutors said that she then spent the money on ostentatious purchases, such as a motorcycle, a Rolls-Royce, and a $148,000 10-carat diamond ring. She also sent money to a co-conspirator and family members.

According to a news release from the Department of Justice, Robertson was found guilty on Tuesday by a federal jury of one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, three counts of wire fraud, and one count of money laundering.

After entering a not guilty plea to the charges in December of last year, Robertson had been released on bond; however, she was placed under arrest pending her April 11 sentencing. For each count of conspiring to commit wire fraud and wire fraud, she could spend up to 20 years in prison; additionally, she could spend up to 10 years for money laundering.

In addition, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution revealed:

A business owner and attorney from Atlanta who had worked for the city as a police officer and attorney was found guilty on Tuesday of defrauding the federal government of over $7 million in funds intended for the Paycheck Protection Program.

Shelitha Robertson, according to the prosecution, purchased a motorcycle, a Rolls-Royce, and a 10-carat diamond ring for $148,000 with the money her businesses received.

Robertson refuted allegations that she fabricated employment figures for four of her companies to secure millions of dollars in government funding intended to support small enterprises amid the coronavirus outbreak.

She attributed her companies’ false 2020 PPP loan applications to Chandra Norton, her personal attorney and then-friend, who entered a guilty plea in a different case.

After roughly two days of deliberations, a jury consisting of seven men and five women found Robertson guilty of three charges of wire fraud as well as one count each of money laundering and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
