NJ Governor BOOED off the Stage

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, a Democrat, entered the stage at a performance in Red Bank to a steady stream of jeers from the crowd.

Musician Brian Kirk invited Governor Murphy to join him on stage while performing live at Red Rock Tap & Grill in Red Bank. The crowd, however, overwhelmingly booed the governor as he entered the room. Murphy departed the stage without saying goodbye to the crowd but hugged and shook hands with the musicians.

“Hey, what did I tell you guys,” Kirk, who was clearly upset, informed the crowd. “Listen to me. Listen to me. He didn’t want to hear that. He’s a buddy of mine. This is not about politics. He’s a friend of mine. Do not do that. Please. Don’t do that.”

Since 2018, Murphy has served as governor of New Jersey, replacing the unpopular Chris Christie. Despite winning the 2017 election, Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli sharply criticized his management of COVID and lockdowns in 2021.

By a narrow margin of fewer than 90,000 votes and slightly over three percentage points, Murphy unexpectedly prevailed in a hotly contested election. This result represents a dramatic shift from Murphy’s stunning victory against his GOP opponent, Kim Guadagno, in 2017, when the margin of victory was over 300,000 votes.

Despite a close call in 2021, Murphy’s approval ratings have stayed largely positive. A recent Rutgers-Eagleton survey indicates that 47% of people approve of the governor. However, just 42% of those polled thought New Jersey was on the right road, while 50% voiced concern about the state’s future.
