On Hilton Head Island, a terrible occurrence happened when a woman was tragically bitten by a large alligator while walking her dog. This is the second occurrence of this kind to occur in Beaufort County in the past twelve months.

A lagoon near the Spanish Wells Golf Club may have been the site of an alligator assault, according to Beaufort County authorities. When they arrived, they found the victim’s body being guarded by the alligator at the edge of the lagoon.

“Rescue efforts were made, and an alligator appeared and was guarding the woman, interrupting emergency efforts,” the sheriff’s office reported. “The gator was safely removed from the area, and the woman’s body was recovered.”

The incident’s offending alligator was put down.

The victim’s dog was discovered in fine condition, according to a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.

A horrific tragedy took place in Sun City Hilton Head in August 2022. 88-year-old Nancy Ann Jackson Becker was brutally attacked by an alligator just outside her own house. This worrying episode is the county’s fourth alligator attack in as few as 11 weeks.

An elderly Florida woman walking her dog was tragically killed by an alligator.

A wildlife camera that was carefully positioned on the property captured the tragic event.

Alligator assaults are becoming more frequent, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as a result of the growing human population and their incursion into these animals’ natural habitats.

In the last 20 years, South Carolina’s population has increased by about 30%. Between 1990 and 2010, Beaufort County saw a startling 88% rise in population. And since 2010, it has kept expanding; now, it has increased by 24%.

In an interview with Fox35, well-known “gator trapper” Frank Robb discusses the effects of an expanding human population on the alligator population.

“The more Florida expands, the more people we get into Florida, the more people we keep jamming down here, we’re building on a lot of areas that are surrounding marsh areas and wild areas,” Robb said.

“Conflict like this is becoming more common, but that’s not the alligator’s fault,” he added. “The alligator doesn’t want to be doing this, and of course, people don’t want that type of interaction.”
