The cost of confirming each staff member’s official Twitter profile will not be covered by the White House.
Recent announcements by Elon Musk that the social media network will change its verified check mark mechanism have shocked the Twitterverse. The desired symbol will only be available to paid Twitter Blue subscribers after the removal of the legacy verification badges. It’s also a little fee to pay for online validation at just $8 each month.

Twitter’s once free verification service for protecting well-known accounts is no longer available. Who can afford to validate their accounts under the new pay-to-verify system, which has politicians and celebrities worried, and who will be left without verification, as in the case of the Biden administration?
When President Biden assumed office, a sizable amount of money has been allocated by the United States in assistance of Ukraine. In reaction to Russia’s aggressive moves in February 2022, the US provided Ukraine with more over $30 billion in aid, according to the Secretary of Defense. It is evident that Washington fully supports its allies in Ukraine during these trying times.
Rob Flaherty, the director of digital strategy at the White House, confirmed internally that they will not be signing up for the new verification method. Flaherty informed employees in a Friday afternoon email. “It is our understanding that Twitter Blue does not provide person-level verification as a service. Thus, a blue check mark will now simply serve as a verification that the account is a paid user.”
He continued, “Twitter’s enterprise service, Verification for Organization, does appear to provide organization-association verification. There are ongoing trials for the program that we are monitoring, but we will not enroll in it.”
The need of verification is being emphasized by the White House in order to help its team communicate with the public on behalf of the administration. To increase confidence between the public and the government, designated Twitter personas along with verification are essential. The main worry, though, is how charging users for verification may affect the capacity of public figures to interact with their Twitter following. The question is still open and raises an ambiguous issue.

Awwwww our politicians can’t afford $8.00 per month when they make 2-3 times more than the average American. Boo hoo. Don’t know why they ever thought? It was okay for the taxpayers to be paying for their twitter accounts anyway. And a blue check mark is not going to build trust what you do is what builds trust. And right now you’re not building any. Especially not after your behavior today
