Because of the economic goals of “socialism,” The Financial Times was informed by Marcus. “Nobody works. Nobody gives a damn. ‘Just give it to me. Send me money. I don’t want to work — I’m too lazy, I’m too fat, I’m too stupid.’”
Marcus, a 93-year-old wise man, stressed the virtues of capitalism, emphasizing how it is based on rewarding merit and is hence strong and fair.

“I’m worried about capitalism,” Marcus said. “Capitalism is the basis of Home Depot [and] millions of people have earned this success and had success. I’m talking manufacturers, vendors and distributors and people that work for us able to enrich themselves by the journey of Home Depot. That’s the success. That’s why capitalism works.”
According to Marcus, a company’s main responsibility is to make money, and by doing so, it may benefit both its clients and workers. He vehemently disagreed with the idea that businesses should prioritize any other “social purposes.” objectives.
“The role of a business is to sell a product and make a profit,” he said. “The whole idea that a business is set up for social purposes doesn’t make sense to me.”
Marcus and Arthur Blank speculate that starting their revolutionary company Home Depot now would prove to be a lot greater struggle than it was when it initially began because of the challenges given by the current regulatory environment. Small firms have challenges competing with bigger ones that have access to greater resources due to the growing limitations of big government and a workforce that is becoming worse.
“We would end up with 15, 16 stores,” he said. “I don’t know that we could go further.”
With 2,300 locations throughout North America and an astonishing market valuation of $300 billion, Home Depot is a thriving economic behemoth. Additionally, they have generated astounding revenue totals of more than $150 billion annually!

When Marcus cofounded Home Depot in 1979, he embarked on a remarkable adventure that would last for the next 19 years as the company’s CEO and chairman of the board. Marcus had already had a lasting impression on the history of American retailing when his career came to an end with retirement in 2002.
Marcus is a well-known politician who has long donated a significant sum to conservative organizations, most notably via his staunch support of former President Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign. Even though he was no longer employed by them directly, his actions like these incited outrage from the public and resulted in widespread boycotts against firms linked with him.
Republican politicians, notably Governor Ron DeSantis, have Marcus’ unwavering support. Marcus supports him wholeheartedly and without regret, with the possibility of a 2024 presidential campaign announcement on the horizon. “I give money to them because I hope they’re going to do the right thing,” Marcus said.
Marcus called Trump’s programs “spot on,” but he did not declare which candidate he would support for the GOP nomination.
“It’s going to be very interesting in ’24 because I think DeSantis will challenge him. And may the better man win,” Marcus said.
