On Saturday evening, Twitter made headlines by removing posts containing screenshots of former President Trump’s tweets in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection – even if those posts denounced his words and actions.
On Jan. 6th, 2021, a crucial day in American politics and the world of social media, employees at one prominent site were confronted with an unprecedented conundrum – how to respond when users took screenshots of posts by former President Trump which had been removed or otherwise suppressed? Serendipitously enough this issue landed on Michael Shellenberger’s radar who subsequently posted about it via the aforementioned platform – prompting dialogue surrounding such tweets from citizens whose criticisms weren’t spared either despite their questioning stance on the incumbent’s potentially incendiary commentary.

With tensions running high, one staffer urged for a “strike” against an account that was criticizing President Trump – drawing careful caution from still another employee.
A user was recently upset about Twitter deleting a tweet from President Trump, but they were delighted to see that the moderators had decided not to punish them for sharing an innocent photograph.
The employee was in compliance with the internal messaging, recommending that one-time remarks should be offered for a tweet agreeing with their opinion and deleted if it does not.
Twitter employees have been taking specific action against individual posts, without having to permanently ban users. One-off interventions are now commonly referred to as such.
Matt Taibbi, a renowned journalist and author of several books including Hate Inc., revealed how Twitter had been eroding its standards before January 6th 2021 through his latest investigation. He disclosed more information on this subject recently, showing how their quality assurance protocols had deteriorated prior to President Trump being barred from tweeting two days later, as evidenced by documents he published on December 2nd that shed light on the company’s actions regarding an October report about the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop.
Bari Weiss presented a telling revelation: Twitter had apparently been “shadowbanning” conservative accounts, including those of Dan Bongino and Charlie Kirk. Elon Musk’s recent acquisition of the platform appears to be driven by his intention for transparency; he stated that going public with internal conversations about censorship was essential in order to restore trust from both users and non-users alike.
