In a stunning development just 48 hours before Election Day, Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens has broken with her own party’s Senate nominee and thrown her support behind Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s closely watched Senate contest.
The unexpected endorsement has exposed deep divisions within the Michigan Democratic Party, turning an already contentious Senate campaign into an increasingly public battle over ideology, Israel, and the direction of the party.
Stevens, who lost the Democratic Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed in August, had previously pledged to support her former opponent in November. But following several days of escalating disagreements, the Michigan congresswoman made a dramatic announcement Sunday that few party leaders appeared to anticipate.
The announcement came after Stevens appeared alongside Rogers at a Sunday worship service at Perfecting Church in Detroit.
