The Trump administration is working on a potentially significant change to federal child-care policy that could provide financial assistance to certain married families even when one parent chooses to remain at home and care for the children.
The proposal is reportedly being pushed as a priority of Vice President JD Vance, who has repeatedly argued that parents should have more freedom to decide how their young children are cared for. Rather than creating an entirely new federal program, the administration is considering changes to an existing child-care subsidy system that has traditionally been aimed at helping parents who work outside the home.
At the center of the proposal is the Child Care and Development Fund, a federal program administered through the Department of Health and Human Services.
