A stunning Democratic Senate primary upset in Florida has opened a much larger political question: Is the Democratic Party’s leftward shift being driven solely by voters, or is a much broader network of money and activism helping reshape the party?
State Rep. Angie Nixon, a Democratic Socialists of America member, defeated Alex Vindman in Florida’s Democratic Senate primary by roughly 12 points, winning 56% to 44%. Vindman entered the contest with national name recognition from his role during President Donald Trump’s first impeachment and a major financial advantage. Reports indicate his campaign raised more than $16 million, while Nixon’s campaign had raised less than $1 million.
The result was particularly striking because of Florida’s political transformation. President Trump carried the state by 13 points in 2024, and Republicans have built a formidable statewide advantage in recent years.
