Michigan officials have announced a new round of criminal charges stemming from allegations that noncitizens participated in the state’s 2024 general election, putting renewed attention on election security and the safeguards surrounding voter registration.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Thursday that her office had charged five noncitizens accused of voting or attempting to vote in the November 2024 election. A sixth person, a U.S. citizen, was also charged after allegedly helping register a noncitizen spouse to vote.
The announcement comes after a much broader review of suspected noncitizen voting cases. According to the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, the Michigan Department of State referred 16 cases involving the 2024 election during 2025. Another 22 cases involving suspected noncitizen voting or related conduct in elections dating from 2009 through 2025 were referred in 2026.
