Dr. Anthony Fauci returned to Capitol Hill on Wednesday for a closely watched Senate hearing that quickly erupted into a tense confrontation, as the former government health official invoked his constitutional rights and refused to answer lawmakers’ questions about his role during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The hearing, led by Senate Committee Chairman Sen. Rand Paul, centered on Fauci’s decisions while serving as the nation’s top infectious disease expert throughout the pandemic. However, before lawmakers could begin their questioning, Fauci announced that he would not be providing testimony.
In his opening remarks, Fauci declared that he would invoke his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. He also accused Paul of attempting to create what he described as a political “perjury trap,” arguing that the hearing was designed to produce legal jeopardy rather than uncover facts.
