Newly unsealed court records are reigniting questions about the security of the 2020 presidential election, with documents revealing details that critics argue were withheld from the American public for years. The records, first highlighted in 2024 and followed by additional disclosures in 2025, have fueled fresh scrutiny of statements made by federal officials who repeatedly described the election as the “most secure” in U.S. history.
That claim became one of the defining narratives following the 2020 election. It was echoed by Democrats, then-President-elect Joe Biden, major media outlets, and officials within the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Former CISA Director Chris Krebs became the public face of that message after repeatedly defending the integrity of the election despite widespread concerns raised by President Donald Trump and his supporters.
Krebs, who was dismissed by President Trump shortly after the election, appeared before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on December 16, 2020. During his testimony, he delivered the statement that would become one of the most frequently cited quotes surrounding the election.
