Lindsey Graham’s Successor Is Official

South Carolina has a new interim voice in the United States Senate following the sudden passing of longtime Senator Lindsey Graham, with Governor Henry McMaster announcing the appointment of Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to temporarily fill the vacancy.

The announcement came during a 4 p.m. press conference after reports of the decision spread rapidly across social media and political circles throughout the day. Governor McMaster confirmed that he personally reached out to Nordone early Sunday morning to ask whether she would be willing to continue her late brother’s service to the people of South Carolina.

According to the governor, he also discussed the decision with President Donald Trump shortly afterward. McMaster said the president immediately supported the idea, believing it would be an appropriate way to honor the late senator’s legacy.

Nordone accepted the appointment and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve. She thanked Governor McMaster and the people of South Carolina for what she described as the “honor and privilege” of stepping into the role. She also pledged to continue supporting President Trump’s agenda while representing the state in Washington.

President Trump publicly endorsed Nordone earlier in the day with a message posted on Truth Social.

“I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina. This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly,” the president posted on Truth Social.

The president’s endorsement quickly fueled speculation that McMaster would move forward with the appointment, speculation that proved accurate once the governor formally announced his decision.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) also voiced approval of the selection before the official announcement. Speaking with reporters, Thune said the appointment would “make a lot of sense.”

Before the press conference, a spokesperson for Governor McMaster confirmed only the timing of the announcement and declined to discuss the governor’s decision in advance.

South Carolina law gives the governor the authority to appoint a replacement when a vacancy occurs in the U.S. Senate. That appointment remains in effect until voters elect a successor through the state’s special election process.

Under those procedures, Nordone will serve as South Carolina’s interim senator until the next elected senator assumes office. The current Senate term expires in January 2027, meaning her appointment provides continuity during the transition period following her brother’s unexpected death.

Lindsey Graham passed away Saturday evening after suffering a cardiac event, bringing an abrupt end to more than two decades of service in the U.S. Senate. First elected in 2002, Graham became one of South Carolina’s most recognizable political figures and was a prominent ally of President Trump on national security, judicial nominations, and foreign policy issues.

Although Darline Graham Nordone has remained largely outside the political spotlight, she has long been one of the closest people in her brother’s life. Known publicly as Darline Graham, she is Lindsey Graham’s only sibling and has frequently been mentioned by the senator when discussing his family and personal life.

Following the deaths of their parents, Graham often credited his sister as an important source of encouragement and stability. The senator never married and had no children, making their relationship one of the defining personal connections throughout his life.

While Nordone has never previously held elected office, her appointment creates a historic moment by placing a member of the Graham family in the very Senate seat Lindsey Graham occupied since 2003. Supporters have characterized the move as both a tribute to the late senator and a way to ensure continuity until South Carolina voters choose his long-term successor.

Because Senator Graham had already secured the Republican nomination for the 2026 general election before his passing, state election law requires Republicans to hold a special primary to select a new nominee.

That Republican primary is scheduled for August 11, 2026, with the general election to follow in November. The winner of that election will begin serving a new six-year Senate term in January 2027.

Even before Governor McMaster announced Nordone’s appointment, attention had already turned toward the upcoming Republican contest.

Among the names discussed as possible candidates are Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette, who narrowly lost a gubernatorial primary runoff to Attorney General Alan Wilson, along with U.S. Representatives Ralph Norman and Nancy Mace, both of whom also competed in the recent gubernatorial primary.

For now, however, South Carolina’s Senate seat will remain in the hands of Darline Graham Nordone, whose appointment represents a direct continuation of the Graham family’s service while the state prepares for what is expected to be one of the most closely watched Republican Senate races in the country.
