One Day Later, Trump Scraps His Hormuz Fee

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he is abandoning his earlier proposal to impose a 20% reimbursement fee on cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz, opting instead for what he described as major trade and investment agreements with America’s Gulf allies.

The decision marks a significant shift from the proposal Trump unveiled just one day earlier. At the time, the president argued that because the United States has long played a leading role in protecting one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes, America deserved financial compensation from the nations benefiting from that security.

Following discussions with leaders across the Middle East, however, Trump said a different approach would deliver stronger long-term results for both the United States and its regional partners.
