The death of longtime South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham on Saturday stunned colleagues and political observers across Washington, bringing an abrupt end to the career of one of the Senate’s most recognizable voices on foreign policy.
At 71 years old, Graham maintained an active schedule that included international travel, policy discussions, and regular conversations with President Donald Trump. By all outward appearances, he remained deeply engaged in legislative and diplomatic efforts until his final hours.
One of Graham’s last conversations was with President Trump shortly before his death. During the exchange, Graham expressed optimism about the work he still hoped to accomplish, even making light of the situation.
