DOJ Sends Tough Message to All 50 States

The Department of Justice is putting every state on notice ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, warning that officials who permit noncitizens to vote in federal contests could face criminal prosecution.

According to reports, the DOJ has dispatched letters to election officials in all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia, making it clear that federal authorities expect full compliance with laws restricting voting in federal elections to U.S. citizens. The move marks one of the strongest election integrity warnings issued by the department in recent years.

The letters were signed by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who leads the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. In them, Dhillon warned that election officials could be held personally responsible if they knowingly allow ineligible individuals to remain on voter rolls or cast ballots.
