A dramatic Senate showdown in the early hours of the morning has delivered a major victory for Republican lawmakers and President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda, after weeks of political brinkmanship over funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
What began as a 76-day standoff over DHS appropriations ended with Republicans bypassing Democratic resistance entirely, locking in tens of billions of dollars in long-term funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol without needing a single Democratic vote.
The political fight had been building for weeks, with Democrats repeatedly blocking DHS funding bills in an effort to force sweeping changes to immigration enforcement policy.
According to GOP lawmakers, Democrats demanded new restrictions on ICE operations, including warrant requirements, mask bans for agents, and additional limits on enforcement tactics.
Republicans rejected those conditions outright.
