Democrats React as Trump Locks In Immigration Funding

President Donald Trump has officially signed a sweeping $70 billion immigration enforcement funding package into law, marking one of the most significant federal investments in border security and immigration enforcement in modern U.S. history. The measure locks in long-term funding for key federal agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), stretching through 2029 and effectively securing the financial backbone of the administration’s immigration agenda for the remainder of its term.

The legislation, known as the Secure America Act, moved through Congress after months of political confrontation over immigration and homeland security funding. It ultimately cleared the House of Representatives by a razor-thin 214–212 vote after already passing the Senate, highlighting just how divided Washington remains on border policy. Despite the narrow margins, Republicans were able to push the bill forward using the budget reconciliation process, which allowed them to bypass a filibuster and pass the measure with a simple majority vote.

At its core, the bill represents a massive, multi-year funding commitment aimed at expanding and sustaining federal immigration enforcement operations. Roughly $38 billion is designated for ICE, while about $26 billion is allocated to CBP and the Border Patrol. An additional $5 billion has been reserved for operational contingencies and other Department of Homeland Security priorities, giving agencies flexibility to respond to unexpected surges or enforcement demands.
