A late-night operation in Eagle Pass, Texas, led state troopers to what authorities say was yet another example of how criminal smuggling organizations continue to operate despite major improvements in border security.
What officers discovered inside a local hotel room paints a troubling picture of the challenges still facing law enforcement along the southern border.
According to authorities, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded after receiving information connected to suspected human smuggling activity. When officers arrived, they uncovered four illegal immigrants allegedly being concealed inside the room.
Two of those individuals were not simply illegal border crossers.
Investigators identified them as Honduran nationals with ties to the Rollin’ 30s Crips street gang.
The discovery highlights a concern frequently raised by border security advocates: criminal organizations are often able to exploit weaknesses in the immigration system and move dangerous individuals throughout the country.
