A North Carolina school district has become the latest battleground in the national fight over Title IX after allegations surfaced that female students were expected to change clothes in front of male students and were allegedly told there was little school officials could do about it.
The controversy has now attracted the attention of President Donald Trump’s Department of Education, which announced a federal civil rights investigation into the district’s handling of the complaints.
At the center of the dispute is Cabarrus County Schools, where several female students reportedly raised concerns about being required to use changing facilities alongside biological males. According to reports, one student sought help from school administrators after expressing discomfort over the situation.
Instead of receiving assurances that her concerns would be addressed, the student was allegedly informed that the district had limited options and that she could choose to change elsewhere if she did not feel comfortable.
For many parents, that response represented a stunning abandonment of one of the most basic expectations families have when they send their children to school: privacy and safety.
Critics argue that school leaders effectively placed the burden on young girls to accommodate controversial gender policies rather than protecting female students from situations they found distressing.
